Winter Park, FL

History

In the late 1800's, the South Florida Railroad connected Orlando and Sanford. Loring Augustus Chase, a bookkeeper and Civil War Veteran, was riding the railroad during a recuperative trip to Florida after suffering from Lung Disease. He noticed an attractive area of land with pristine lakes as he traveled, and set out to found this area as Winter Park. Eventually, land began to sell at around two hundred dollars an acre. Through the years, many United States presidents have visited the city, including Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Barack Obama.
